One of the first things to do is to set
a date for stopping that will work for you. The date you choose to stop smoking
should be one during which you have the time and energy to do things
differently. It is also important to understand the things that lead you to
smoke so you can prepare yourself to handle these situations without tobacco.
Think about when and where you smoke, what you are doing and how you feel when
you are smoking. You'll see patterns that can help you identify your smoking
triggers. Being aware of these triggers is the first step in overcoming them.
These tips may help you get through the
tough times:
-
In your ZYBAN® Net booklet, write down
the situations that lead you to smoke. Plan how you will handle specific
situations before they arise, so you're not caught off guard. Also write down
the main reasons that you want to stop smoking. Keep this booklet handy, and
remind yourself of these thoughts when you have an urge to smoke.
-
Make a list of people to contact for support and
encouragement. Many people find it really helpful to just say what's on their
mind, or get advice from someone who has been through the process.
-
Change your routines. Particular situations and
people often trigger cravings, so it is helpful to do things differently. For
example, drink tea instead of coffee, or take a walk at lunch. Just moving
around can get you through a tough moment.
-
Think about what life will be like when you no
longer have an urge to smoke. Some people find it motivating to focus on being
free from the unpleasant parts of smoking like always needing to find a time
and place to smoke.
-
Notice where in your life you find strength to do
things you don't want to do. Notice what works for you and apply that strength
to stopping smoking.
-
Plan ways to reward yourself. Stopping smoking is
a process that happens minute by minute and one day at a time. Acknowledge each
step you accomplish and stay very positive about these achievements.
